The toxicity of benzodiazepines may cause central nervous system depression, slurred speech, lack of muscle coordination, and respiratory depression. The toxicity of benzodiazepines is aggravated when they are taken in combination with other medications (tricyclic antidepressants, opiates) and alcohol. However, toxicity and adverse health effects are observed in individuals with benzodiazepine overdose and abuse. Benzodiazepines, when taken at recommended levels, are considered safe. The widespread use and easy availability of benzodiazepine drugs have led to drug overdose and abuse. They treat conditions such as seizures, insomnia, and anxiety.
